Teléfono Público Wins Best Independent Film at AAIFF Americas’
Mexican filmmaker Mois Roditi has won the Best Independent Film Award at AAIFF Americas’ – The All Americas’ Independent Film Festival for his feature film Teléfono Público (Public Telephone).
The award also marks the beginning of a new collaboration between AAIFF Americas’ and The Tarkovski Grant, with Roditi becoming the festival’s first recipient. AAIFF Americas’ is also the first Mexican film festival to present The Tarkovski Grant.
Produced by Alejandro Hirsch Saed and Mois Roditi, Teléfono Público is a 76-minute dramatic feature set in Mexico City. After a nighttime earthquake disrupts the city’s phone lines, different people are forced to use a public telephone, gradually revealing intimate fragments of their lives.
Through long takes and an emotionally driven sound design, the film explores vulnerability, privacy and human connection in a public space. As the individual stories begin to intersect, the film builds toward a collective emotional portrait of the city.
AAIFF Americas’ was created to support independent filmmakers from across the Americas and is part of the wider ÉCU Film Festival Group, alongside ÉCU – The European Independent Film Festival in Paris.
By presenting The Tarkovski Grant alongside its Best Independent Film Award, the festival extends its support beyond the festival itself. Roditi will receive complimentary submission fee waivers to a curated international network of film festivals, helping Teléfono Público continue its festival journey.
Established in 2015, The Tarkovski Grant has supported more than 6,000 independent filmmakers worldwide. Supported films have gone on to screen at festivals including Cannes, Sundance and TIFF, with several later receiving Academy Award recognition.
The collaboration with AAIFF Americas’ is the first step in a wider relationship between The Tarkovski Grant and the ÉCU Film Festival Group.
